Implementing tablet-based Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) in the cockpit requires a power source that protects both the airframe and the electronic flight bag itself. Like most tablets, the Apple®2 iPad®2 use a lithium-ion battery technology that, when incorrectly charged, can lead to catastrophic secondary failure modes for pilots to contend with including fire, explosion and the release of overcoming toxic fumes (to name a few). The FAA has speciﬁc requirements for powering these devices.
The Power Conditioning Module (PCM) provides Aircraft Power Secondary charging power to Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Apple iPad when such units are deployed as EFBs. The PCM receives standard unconditioned aircraft 28VDC power input from the aircraft Shed Bus and monitors, converts and outputs conditioned and regulated power compatible with the compatible Apple consumer electronic devices and is comprised of the following design characteristics, safety interlocks and status monitoring features:
