Power Conditioning Solutions

Implementing tablet-based Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) in the cockpit requires a power source that protects both the airframe and the electronic flight bag itself. Like most tablets, the Apple®2 iPad®2 use a lithium-ion battery technology that, when incorrectly charged, can lead to catastrophic secondary failure modes for pilots to contend with including fire, explosion and the release of overcoming toxic fumes (to name a few). The FAA has specific requirements for powering these devices.

Power Conditioning Module (p/n 1044-5002-00)

The Power Conditioning Module (PCM) provides Aircraft Power Secondary charging power to Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Apple iPad when such units are deployed as EFBs. The PCM receives standard unconditioned aircraft 28VDC power input from the aircraft Shed Bus and monitors, converts and outputs conditioned and regulated power compatible with the compatible Apple consumer electronic devices and is comprised of the following design characteristics, safety interlocks and status monitoring features:

  • Embedded GFI circuit protection
  • Intelligent thermal management monitoring and protection
  • Over/Under-current monitoring and protection
  • Over/Under-voltage protection circuits
  • CLSP Technology (Connection Load Sensing Protection) ensures touch-safety when not in use
  • Integrated “power available” and “system status” support for integrations featuring a remote-located user switch-annunciators, capable of providing operators with an intuitive visual feedback of system status
  • Soft internal lighting for status indications, preserves pilot night-vision and provides visibility in dark cockpit environments
  • Designed to both FAA and military specifications for exceptionally high reliability

The flyTab PCM provides continuously filtered and monitored power to your iPad. The PCM is designed to be integrated directly into the flyTab mounting system, providing an integrated solution to mount and power your iPad based EFBs and delivers:

  • Clean power for Apple iPad
  • Exceptional power-to-weight ratio, weighing less than 0.5 lbs
  • High efficiency power conditioning technology
  • Passive cooling (silent operation)
  • Aerospace grade system interconnects
  • MIL-STD-D38999 I/O connector
  • EMI and RMI compliance – Audio and Radio Frequency (RF) filtering

The flyTab suite of products and solutions is the only Made for iPad Apple approved aviation grade modular power solution FAA-PMA certified to provide cockpit EFB power and mounting solutions specifically designed for iPad EFB deployments.
